HOW COUNSELLING WORKS

Counselling is not the same as advice giving: it is a two-way process to which both parties need to contribute.

Many people use counselling to help them through a tough period in their life. Counselling can help you to identify what is troubling you, enabling you to talk your issues through. Once you’ve explored the options open to you, you can then decide how to move forward. From looking at current and past situations it can also help you to get to know yourself better, and improve self esteem.

It can sometimes be difficult to discuss some things with family and friends. Counselling provides a safe confidential space where you can offload your worries to someone impartial.


SERVICES OFFERED

Everyone is unique and requires different things from counselling. I am an integrative counsellor, having been trained in various techniques, so I can adapt to your needs and personalise my sessions specifically for you.

I mainly draw on the three approaches detailed below:

Humanistic 

The Humanistic approach concentrates on how you are feeling and allows a safe place to talk your issues through. By creating an environment that is empathic, congruent and non-judgemental, the counsellor accepts you for who you are and helps you become more accepting of yourself.

CBT

The CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) approach looks at the situation you are currently in. The counsellor would explore the negative thinking and behaviour you present, help you to recognise triggers, and learn ways break the cycle of this behaviour and thinking. This enables you to cope with everyday life in a more positive way.

Psychodynamic

The Psychodynamic approach looks at your past - how you have been brought up and/or major events in your life. It looks at the unconscious and, by talking through your issues the counsellor would help you gain an insight into yourself and make the unconscious, conscious.

FEES

I charge £50 per 50 minute session. If at the end of the first session you would like to see me again, I would ask for a £20 deposit in advance, for the next session.
